Pauline Bartle Headed to Portland

I'm planning a trip to Portland this weekend with my two kids. My husband is riding the STP and we're going to drive down Sunday and meet him then stay for a couple of days. I'm looking for suggestions on where to eat (good food, kid friendly) and things to do in town. Any suggestions? Continue

David Keenan Hungry Monkey: A Food-Loving Father's Quest to Raise an Adventurous Eater

This book should be required reading for Future Foodies members. Written by Seattle-based restaurant critic Matthew Amster-Burton, the tales of the authors food adventures with his four-year old (eating doughnuts, making sausage), interspersed with some good recipes, will resonate with dads and moms. Continue

Kris Tsujikawa shelf life of soybean paste? miso?

Hello, Does anyone know the shelf life of soybean paste? I googled it and the answer varied from 3 months to 1 year. Thank you! Continue

KJCammer Lemon tart

After many years of following the same recipe for a lemon tart, something finally clicked and this past weekend I achieved tart au citron perfection. I am still happy about this. However, #1 son wasn't interested and preferred vanilla ice cream with multicolored dinosaur sprinkles on top. His loss, my hips gain. Continue

KJCammer Souffle success!

I've been trying to get my son (3 YO picky picky eater) to try new things and to try vegetables. Usually no success. Tonight I whipped up a spinach and cheese souffle and he ate it! And he said, "Mommy, I like this a lot." I am swooning. Contains adult ingredients like gruyere and nutmeg and dry mustard and fresh thyme. And of course spinach. Once you pop it in the oven it takes 25-30 minutes to cook. So, if any of you are looking to make something that (1) allows you to express your culinary ra… Continue

Julie Yea Monsoon East 4/5

My friend and I made reservations for the Future Foodies event at Monsoon East at 5pm on April 5th. We got there and found that the restaurant did not know about Future Foodies and they didn't even have high chairs for either of our kids. Were we mistaken on the date of the event? Continue

Hsiao-Ching Chou Cheerios and Goldfish

We've resisted buying Cheerios, but just to change things up, we bought some Honey Nut Cheerios couple of weeks ago. Meilee loves it. Prior to that, the only time she gets Cheerios is when she goes to Sponge School on Sundays and gets it for a light snack. Goldfish crackers are her other anytime snack. It's just funny how just about every kid loves these two things. Continue

Amy Kramer Hawks 11 months old

My daughter is almost a year old...I don't know WHERE the time has gone...she is eating all kinds of finger foods, and pureed stuff, of course...lately her digestion has been sluggish, and our doctor had us eliminate grains, eggs, and banana from her diet to see how she reacts... she is a bit devestated I think, that she no longer gets her rice and Kamut puffs, which she likes to stuff in her mouth by the fist full...tonight my husband and I had burritos and had corn chips as a side, and she cou… Continue

Hsiao-Ching Chou All Grown Up!

My girl used her chopsticks to eat dinner tonight. Another little triumph! The concentration in her face while she was trying to pick up some rice was clear and so heartening. Happy sigh. Continue

Hsiao-Ching Chou One Last Time

My daughter has learned how to negotiate for another cookie or fill-in-the-blank treat. She flashes the sweetest look and says, "Mama, last one cookie. Please." When I say no, she repeats, "Last one." It's so darn cute that I can't resist. Of course, it's never really the last one, because after eating said "last one" she proceeds to ask for another "last one." Continue

Hsiao-Ching Chou A Taste of TASTE Restaurant

We attended the Future Foodies dinner at TASTE Restaurant last night. Meilee had a really yummy hot dog and fries, and vanilla brownie ice cream for dessert. It was so great to see families there, enjoying a night out. I have to admit that it is… Continue

Hsiao-Ching Chou No to Everything

Such a sweet face. Alas, the terrible twos has made the last few months crazy. Meilee has thrown tantrums that have made me ask: "Is this my child?" Almost every morning starts this way: Meilee: Mama, I'm hungry. (In a whiny voice.) Me: Would you like cereal or yogurt? (Two of her fa… Continue

Tamara Age-appropriate meals

Ani's zeal for solid foods has been truly liberating for my husband and me, and we've come to the point where we rarely bring food along when we go out to eat. We just order meals that she can eat as well and we all can enjoy as a family. Tonight, however, we hit up a local sushi restaurant. Ani's not quite 10 month old, and while I've thrown caution to the wind when it comes to her meals lately, I had to pack up some Thanksgiving leftovers for her to eat this time. I did, however, try to searc… Continue

Heather Hughes Picklicious

Rose's first food was a pickle. Seriously. I'm kind of horrified. I thought her first food would be a vegetable. Something local and organic. Lovingly hand picked by me, steamed and mashed to perfection. Lovingly spooned up and delivered to her plump little lips. "I am SUCH a great mom" I would think to myself as I fed our daughter her first solid food. Um... no. It went something like this: Rose is howling in a Chicago diner, grabbing at my pot roast sandwich and fries. Hanson has less luck w… Continue

Hsiao-Ching Chou Future Foodies/Red Tricycle at Tilth

It was so great to see so many families at Tilth last night for the first event in our family dining series. The parents I talked to were so greatful for the chance to dine out at Tilth with their kids. I'm glad everyone enjoyed it. Here are some scenes:

Tamara Independence is messy

My nine-month-old is enjoying the wide world of finger foods so much she no longer will allow us to feed her by spoon. I'm pleased and encouraged by her desire to be more independent, but it is making the post-meal cleanup even more overwhelming than before. I can handle picking up pieces of scrambled eggs that missed her mouth, or carrots that have been crushed into the tray for her high chair. But now there is yogurt (that she tries to scrape off the spoon into her mouth) all over the high-cha… Continue
